Saint George of Komoutou - Saint Mark's Square
History Zante Town Zante Town

In 1669, the Cretans who fled to Zakynthos after the fall of Chandakas brought with them an "ancient", as Zois writes, icon of St. George and gave it to St. Demetrios of Kola.

Some sacrilegious people, however, stripped the icon of its silver lining.

Eight days later the inhabitants of the district were struck by a plague (plague), which was considered a divine punishment for sacrilege.

The people resorted to fasting and prayers and it was decided to build a church of Saint George.

Thus, Agios Georgios of Komoutos or Kamariotis was built in 1688, on a plot of land granted for this purpose by Iakovos Komoutos.

In 1689, by decree of the provost Kouerini, the icon of St. George was officially litanced on 31 January, to commemorate the relief of the island from the plague.
