The Clock
History Zante Town Zante Town

On 20 September 1805 the government of the Ionian State decided to place two clocks in the city of Zakynthos. The then "Rector" of Zakynthos, Marinos Veyas, proposed the placement of one clock in St Mark's Square and the other in the church of Ascension.

In August 1806, the Consul of the Ionian Islands in Trieste, Pellegrini, concluded a contract between the Ionian State and the German clockmaker Derxinger, according to which the clockmaker was obliged to come himself to Zakynthos and install the two clocks.

One clock, according to the decision of the Senate on 9 November 1806, was placed in the tower of St. Mark's, which was repaired, but the other, due to "political changes", was never placed.

The Municipal Clock was demolished in the earthquake of 1893 and in 1894 under the mayoralty of Anastasios Ermannos Loudzi the tower was rebuilt and the clock was repaired.
