History Zante Town Zante Town

In 1865, one year after the Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece, Dimitrios Solomos transferred from Corfu the remains of his brother Dionysios and they were buried in a built crypt under "the clock of Foros".

A mausoleum was erected at the grave of the national poet with a bust of him, the work of the Fytalis brothers. The following verses by Dimitrios Solomos were engraved on the pedestal of the monument:

When we were being pushed by the wave,

Your remains were being burned, that the end

Where you have seen the light, you will have a tomb.
