Column for Filiki Eteria.
Sculpture Zante Town Zante Town
In the courtyard of St. George of Filikon, with the actions of the then prefect Andreas Ioannou, a marble column was placed, which was transferred from a monument of the central cemetery, to honour the greek society "Filiki Etaireia". The remains of Andreas Kalvos (1792-1869) and his wife Augusta Carlotta Vandams (1802-1888) were buried here in 1960, when they were removed from Louth, Kentington, and before being deposited in the Salmon and Kalvos Mausoleum. Above the column is inscribed: 'Zakynthos to the "Filiki Etaireia" of which it was the refuge and nourishment'. On the reverse side, the verses from the poem 'Eis Doxan' by Andreas Kalvos: "Warmest desire, I have been inspired by the glory in the hearts of your children, oh Greece and you are called mother of heroes".
