Monument for the fallen of Mahairado
Sculpture East Central Zakynthos East Central Zakynthos
In the central square of the village of Machairado, which bears the name of Agia Paraskevi, because the homonymous church existed in the area before the earthquake, in 1984 a stone monument was constructed in memory of the inhabitants of the community who died in the nation's struggles. On the front of the monument there is an inscription in relief: "Maherado 1984" and a relief depiction of Liberty in motion, holding a veil outstretched with her left hand and a sword with her right hand. At the bottom of the monument the words have been engraved: "If they hate each other, they should not have Liberty",from Dionysios Solomos' "Hymn to Freedom"
