Monument to drowned Occupation Hostages
History Zante Town Zante Town
On Dimokratias Avenue, opposite the building of the Labour Centre, in 1964, the Zakynthos Reserve Officers' Association built a marble monument in honour of the hostages of the Occupation, who drowned in 1943 in the Adriatic Sea, when the ship Cita di Genova, which was carrying them to Italy, was torpedoed. The marble column of the monument is placed on a base of stones from the sea, while a brass wreath of laurel branches is incorporated into the upper part of the monument's face. The inscription is the following: 'This is the monument that the people of Zakynthos respectfully dedicate to the memory of the hostages drowned on 21.1.1943 for their homeland'. Then their rank and their names are inscribed. The column is crowned with a marble construction in the shape of an ancient dominion.
