The Zakynthos National Marine Park includes the marine area on the islands of Laganas Bay, the sea turtle nesting beaches and a land zone surrounding them, the wetland of Lake Keri and the Strophades Islands, which are located about 40 miles south of Zakynthos. It was established to protect and conserve animal and plant habitats which are of great national and international natural heritage importance.   The conservation of the natural heritage and the preservation of the ecological balance of the marine and coastal area of Laganas Bay and all the islands of the prefecture of Zakynthos with the parallel development of activities in harmony with the protection of nature are the main concerns of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.   Within the boundaries of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos is one of the most important breeding habitats of the sea turtle Caretta caretta in the Mediterranean. It also includes important habitats for the Mediterranean seal Monachus monachus, migratory birdlife, endemic flora and habitats of European and Mediterranean interest, such as the dune and alophilic vegetation systems and the submarine beds of the Posidonia oceanica.
