It was inaugurated on 10 March 1871 by the Metropolitan of Zakynthos Nikolaos Katramis (1820-1886) together with the orthodox church of Saint Theophilos of Zakynthos. The first burial of a deceased took place on 1 March 1871. During the mayoralty of Talbot Kefalinos, works were carried out to preserve some of the monuments, a canteen was built, the corridors were cemented and the rules of operation were voted, which are still in use today. It is one of the most important open-air museums of sculpture in Greece and a place for reading the public history of Zakynthos, as the persons who played a role in the development of its history are buried there.
