Agios Nikolaos of Molos

The church of Agios Nikolaos of Molos was built by the sailors of the city of Zakynthos in 1561, on a small island in the Aegean Sea. They petitioned the Venetian commander of the island and promised to maintain a lantern for the sailors at their expense. After later embankments, this islet was joined to the mainland and formed the extreme coastal part of the present-day Solomos Square. The church belonged to the guild of grain merchants and sailors. Great artists worked on its decoration, such as Dimitrios Stavrakis, Nikolaos Kallergis, and others for the despotic icons. At noon on Good Friday, the Crucifixion of the church, the work of Nik. Koutouzi. On the walls are newer and older icons from the churches of Agia Paraskevi of Atsiggana, Agios Spyridon of Flambourriaris and Agioi Anargyroi. Almost in the middle of the church are two stone beads of the vicar of Agios Nikolaos, in 1583, Archbishop Dionysios Siguros, the later Saint and Protector of Zakynthos, and a cross of the same, which he used in holy water. The wood-carved quadruped and the wood-carved bench of the commissioners, works of the 17th century, are worthy of note. The church was Crusader, as shown by a built-in exterior plaque, dated 1612. The original bell tower was turreted and angular. The church and the newer bell tower were restored after the 1953 earthquakes.
