All about Zakynthos

The Catholic church of Agios Markos is located on the site of the pre-seismic church of the same name, which had an important gallery and a valuable historical archive. The original church was built in the early 17th century on the Aegialos, today's Agios Markos Square. It had several phases of reconstruction due to frequent destruction by earthquakes. Since 1747, when the Catholic Bishop and historian of Zakynthos, Balthasar Maria Remodini, built a magnificent church, it was established as a Catholic Metropolis.
