Post-Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos
History Zante Town Zante Town
In Solomos Square is the imposing building that houses the Museum of Post-Byzantine Art. The building of the pre-earthquake museum collapsed in the devastating earthquake of 1953. After the earthquake it was rebuilt in the same location and its current form was organized by the academic Manolis Hatzidakis. The post-earthquake museum was opened to the public in 1960. Through its exhibits the visitor can approach the influence of Byzantine, Cretan and Western Art in the formation of the Ionian School of Painting. In the Museum's collection we can admire works of Byzantine, Cretan, Cretan, Ionian and Zakynthian styles by great artists such as Nikolaos Koutouzi, Nikolaos Kantounis, Hieronymos Plakotos and Panagiotis Doxaras.
