Monument in Exo Chora for the heroic battles of the Greeks
Sculpture West Zakynthos West Zakynthos
On a plateau, in the centre of the community of Exo chora, next to the main road, a monument has been constructed from carved sections of large black stone boulders, with embedded white marble slabs, with inscriptions referring to locations where war battles were fought and at the same time reference is made to historical dates when Greek weapons were glorified. On the upper part, on the highest level, there is an iron wrought cross and on the second level, a little lower, there is a bronze model of a vessel for burning incense. In the centre of the monument is the famous phrase of the Spartan mothers:"I tan i epi tas" (to do or to die). The names and dates of the battlefields that adorn the monument are: Gramos, Marathon, Thermopylae, 1940, Tepelenny, 1821, Messolonghi, Salamis, Pindos.
