Monument to the victims of the 1953 earthquake
Sculpture Zante Town Zante Town
In August 2003, the Municipality of Zakynthos, with the completion of 50 years since the earthquakes of '53, commissioned the Zakynthian artist, Dionysis Palmas (1949 - ), to create a monument in the middle of the square, in memory of the victims of the earthquake. The monument consists of a stone column and is complemented by the construction of a model flower made of metal. On the back of the column, a brass relief with the emblem of the Municipality of Zakynthos and the verse of Dionysios Solomos has been carved: "The earthquake's chasm that blossoms and trembles in the air ...". The upper side of the square is also adorned with remnants of worked tufa stoned thorns, coming from the church of St. Nicholas ton Geronton (of the Elders).
